Why Nutrition Matters?

Nutrition is a critical part of health and development. Better nutrition is related to improved infant, child, and maternal health, stronger immune systems, safer pregnancy and childbirth, lower risk of non-communicable diseases and longevity

Healthy children learn better. People with adequate nutrition are more productive and can create opportunities to gradually break the cycles of poverty and hunger.

Malnutrition, in every form, presents significant threats to human health. Today the world faces a double burden of malnutrition that includes both undernutrition and overweight, especially in low- and middle-income countries. There are multiple forms of malnutrition, including wasting or stunting.

Cost of malnutrition especially stunting in Lao PDR

In 2020, a child born in Laos was expected to be 54% less productive when they grew up compared to a child who completed their education and enjoyed full health.
Economic Impact The burden of malnutrition on the economy is estimated at $482 million annually (2.7% of GDP).
Of this, $212 million (1.2% of GDP) is attributed to child stunting and anemia.
